I just tested this and it works for me just fine
(Firefox 20, firebug 1.11.2, Win Vista, Notepad++ 6.3.2)

You might want to create a new Firefox profile and install only
Firebug in it, to make sure there are no collisions with other
extensions.

Does it help?

(keep your old profile so, you can compare and see what was the problem, if 
the new profile helps)
