I can confirm this. I've been using Firefox every day. Once I was running Firefox 21 (Win7 Home 64 bit), having Firebug open slows down the page I'm on significantly. As suggested I created a new profile and installed Firebug as the only extension. Just as Roberto stated, with Firebug opened the significant slowdown occurs once either (or both) the Console or Script panels is enabled.
Enabling the Net panel while the Script or Console panels are disabled doesn't appear to create any change in performance. Apart from the significant degradation in performance when the Script and/or Console panels are/is enabled, I also noticed the following (in the new profile and my original profile): 1) The animated loading icon freezes for a moment (depending on the page loaded; e.g. for google.com/ and softwareishard.com/ it's hardly noticeable; but try something like http://demo.rockettheme.com/joomla/alerion/) 2) The Net panel doesn't really appear to report any difference -- the page supposedly takes the same time to complete receiving as it does without the Script and/or Console panel disabled. My original profile has several extensions installed, among them being a full UI theme, so as a result of this, I've always noticed a degradation in UI performance when Firebug is open but now it is at a point where this is really noticeable. For example, JavaScript driven rendering effects are noticeably slower and so is scrolling pages up & down and interacting with page modules (e.g. smooth side scrollers, accordions, etc.).
