The use of Linux based solutions, either as a screening router/packet filter or
bastion host, can be justified from two other standpoints. First, though it's
difficult to assess the true practical utility of a philosophy, an open source
paradigm is appealing to me from a security standpoint. Second, the use of free
software allows you to leverage resources for smaller clients and deliver more
affordable or extensive solutions. In the end, it is a little but not much
harder to engineer solutions from the OSS world that are just as stable and
have a number of advantages over their commerical rivals (harder from the
viewpoint of a first-time user - the difficulties disappear with experience).
