Martin,
Failover routing seems to be an issue for allot of people. there is no good
solution. Your idea of a script to ping the interface is a good one but in
our experience its normally the application that fails not the whole box. I
am sure that you could get it to work by pinging a device on the other side
of the firewall but it starts getting untidy.
One idea could be to attach the firewall directly into a router that can
check the status of the adapter (i.e. by using a crossover cable) this way
the routers would be able to determine the status of the adapter and switch
from one to another if needed. Its still not foul proof but it might work
under some fail conditions.
