There is no difference. Application gateway based firewalls, application 
proxy firewalls, and proxy based firewalls are terms for the same 
thing.  Read the literature. Many have gotten away from referring to 
"proxies" because Microsoft has a product with that in its name and it is 
not a firewall. Also, Netscape and others have proxies, that are not 
security devices, but there for performance reasons.
