Technology-wise, it hardly makes a difference anymore.

on which to choose a firewall today are support, reputation
of the vendor, documentation, and interface.

The slightly different ways used to make a difference. Now with feature bloat and the demand for services through the firewall rather than security, I agree, though perhaps for slightly different reasons, that it hardly makes a difference for most firewall customers today. Most want to feel safe. Most believe that the feeling of being safe equates to being secure.

Out of the box a Check Point Firewall-1 can support more services through than an Axent Raptor. But out of the box, it takes a bit more work to shoot yourself in the foot with Rator than with Firewall-1.
