Well, IPSEC or SSH (with port tunnelling) are two obvious choices.
But I'm sure there are also many other solutions.
I'm surprised that you say "nobody has offered a constructive comment".
IPSEC is mentioned both in the paper and the FAQ from counterpane.com
(apparently what you are calling the "bitchin'"), as well as in a number
of the reports in the popular press. Perhaps you didn't read them?
