Too many hops

Hi,

I am trying to send mail through firewall but getting following message:

<<returned mail: too many hops 18(17 max): from <> SIZE=5889 via localhost,
to firewall.

the number of these messages are increasing every day. Does any one have any
clue about this error message. I am not very strong in routers and will
appreciate any input on this error.
