A "host" is simply a network connected computer.
DNS is a method of looking up human friendly
"hostnames" to get the ip address so that
traffic can be directed to the right network.

ie. "bigbox" is a host, it is part of the
    "bigco.com.au" network, its fully qualified
    domain name is "bigbox.bigco.com.au".

For one computer (host) to send trafic
to another they initially rely on the
ip addresses (on a tcp/ip network).
So the sender looks up the recipients
ip address by querying the dns server.

An excellent couple of books on this and more are:

 "TCP/IP Network administration"
  by Craig Hunt - O'Reilly

 "DNS and BIND"
by Paul Albitz and Cricket Liu - O'Reilly
