To my knowledge a load balancer will balance through virtual addresses on a
packet/layer 3 level. If you have web servers you are wanting load balanced
than you want some sort of context based balancing, layer 4 and up. Cisco
has a very nice one and there are a few other good ones.
In this case the load balancer looks all the way through the packet down
through the URL. Most only look at the first 40 bits and /or the cookie, but
the Cisco one looks at the complete URL. This is great for heavy hit web
servers and e-commerce.
