I have used ALTQ with a custom OpenBSD solution. I used a intel box with
(4) quad DLINK NICS, for 16 co-location machines. You can limit bandwidth
using different algorithms (RED, BLUE, etc), IP Addresses and protocols.
The really nice thing about ALTQ is the way it doing the limitation. It
can be very smooth, as compared to Cisco's traffic shaping. Some methods
look very "shark tooth", in that they are very bursty, then they drop very
low. ALTQ can give a nice constant bandwidth that is flexible down to 1k
increments.
Its a cheap way to limit traffic, and if you combine the unit with IPF you
can choke traffic nicely at the ingress point.
