You are correct. The rumors are false. You only need to install SP7.

Is it simply legend that says you need to install each SP (ie to reach SP7,
install SP1, SP2....etc) on a Sun/FW-1 combo?

I installed SP7 directly and the firewall works okay so i am suspicious

what i heard.
