Data link Encryption

Hello everybody ,I'm a student in computer networks and I have a project
consisting of encrypting the data at the IP layer.I know that I should
hack the kernel.Since it is the first time that I will do this,I don't
know at which point I should "modify".
Please can anybody help me in finding interesting references concerning
my project?
