hi ya...

you can check how to implement secure pop3/imap

simply ( in half-line of english)...

pop3 and imap is insecure.....
if you are worried about security...etc.etc...dont use it...
        - use the secure versions of the daemons if you need it

- smtp is for sending/receiving emails...

- pop3 moves your email to your pc that you read it with...

- imap leaves your emails you read in you home directory
  so you can read all you emails from any pc...anywhere in the world

and while we're at it...throw in telnet as being insecure tooo
for almost the same reasons..
