Whilst practical, this isn't strictly true, you could add per-subnet 
routes to each machine with an interface as the destination.

In the case of subnetting for security though a router, firewall or 
multihomed machine serving as a router would be best.

I have, in the past done such subnetting on a single network to make 
traffic source and destinations obvious without routing, but it's unusual 
and I pitty the person who finds a network like that without explaination.
