I did see that, so I looked at $BROWSER, but in fact BROWSER is not set 
for me.  So instead it looks for the "default" browser in some other way.

oh, I didn't know about that! It seems to work for me, let's use it. (is 
there advice about whether to check that before or after or instead of 
explicitly $BROWSER?)
