hmm, fish even has an "open" function (except on MacOSX where it's 
native) that uses xdg-open.  maybe that's the thing to use

Its (open's) documentation is broken in a few ways though... I sent a 
darcs patch to the list to fix it... but I don't see it. Perhaps the 
list doesn't like 50-kilobyte attachments .. oh wait, it was only a 
5-kilobyte attachment, even that?
