This is coming up a bit, and something that has been suggested a few times 
(see https://github.com/fish-shell/fish-shell/issues/904 for the most 
recent) is dynamically adapting your prompt based on the width of the 
window.

You could try inspecting the $COLUMNS variable and outputting a different 
set of variables in the case that the prompt is too long.

It would be nice to have a working example of this either in the FAQ or 
the example prompts; does anyone have one?
