No, we are not changing servers again.
There have been some issues which have risen from the sheer number
of new subscribers to the list, which I hope to address here.
Some quick points:
1. You should never use the "reply" button in conjunction with this
list. It is designed to be free of discussion. This includes telling
the person that they suck or that they rule through some kind of
poetic format. Please, respect the principle this list was founded on:
We are sharing moments, not opinions.
2. If you like the idea of a poem, "riffing" is fine, but please
consider that list traffic has increased substantially since we
started this list. If a poem is perfect, have some respect for it,
and leave it alone.
3. Along these lines, we appreciate it if you would treat this list
as a place to share poetry you have written, not as an incentive to
write poetry when it arrives in your mailbox. It is understood that
you may want to be heard, but please practice some restraint. This
list is more inclined towards sharing than towards self-expression.
- Would I want to stop my day to read this poem?
- How much time have I spent on it, compared to how
many people will read it? There are 80 people on
this list, so by default, if you spend less than
an hour writing a poem, you are spending less than
one minute per person. This is not to say you
should spend hours upon hours on a poem, but please
do not call 80 people over to your house to read
something you are not proud of.
4. I do not moderate this list and I don't intend to, but I would like
to see a bit of self restraint. Because I do not moderate this list,
there are bound to be some stray server errors, such as repeat messages,
etc. Please take this in stride.
5. This should be a fun list and it should also be a moving list. If
we stray too far in either direction, it starts to become a bad list.
6. Scout Thompson's book is on sale:
http://www.one38.org/1000/books.html
7. Thanks everyone for making this list a good place to be. Just please
keep in mind how many people we have on our list as of today, and
pitch in a bit of responsibility towards keeping it balanced and not
overwhelming anyones mailbox. We will only continue to expand, I am
sure.
If you have any comments, please address me PRIVATELY and keep the
comments OFF LIST. Thanks very much.
Thanks!
