I.
It starts with a fairy tale, where we
left home to seek our fortunes.
We've done this twice, you and I.
Its kind of a joke, and kind of
the only thing that was ever real.
I loved that summer because of you.
I never met anyone so perfectly
jigsaw squiggly before then.
You're such a fickle thin thread,
and you saw across the sand
like the sand weren't gold.
Everyone loves your scales,
but I would drown in them.
I wrote you letters, because
you needed letters. It was
a huge pain in the ass,
and I hate paper letters.
II.
In the attic, we crawled together.
The story went: you kept bottles there,
of root beer, and a diary. We made
paths of splintered grey planks.
First, I found you in the woods, a smudge,
with no language. In the cave, I will speak;
even though, tearing rabbits, you are silent.
There are no words for the most perfect things.
Dramatic confessions and imaginary friends,
and drunken declarative moments on the porch--
all we can do together is play, and be completely
real, and laugh in our pajamas, a couple of dumb girls.
I'm afraid I can never bend in the wind.
Even when you were so perfect, I was frozen,
and shattered. One night, you went with them,
I sat and waited for you to remember I didnt go.
When I needed to run, you were my sneakers.
That's how you did it; not for you but for me.
Nobody else ever gave up and lost themselves
the way we did, when we forgot to be two people.
Let's leave. I think I will never touch you,
but one day we will find that we're a single body.
It was always this way, only we are too good
to ruin the most perfect of things with reality.
