I cant imagine how good it would be
if you were here for this lemonade day.
Understand, this is John Crowley's
day in the mountains: "There is almost
a music in such summer views, an
airy exhalation of soprano voices..."
And the mountains were like the pictures
on the cover of a book, or the backs
of playing cards, or my grandmother's
sugar tins. I have so much to say to you,
your ears could never hold it, so I'll stand,
instead, at the edge of this peak, and we
will learn to fly together, or at least,
something momentous will happen!
Look, do you know who you are?
Do you know what I am saying to you?
I will tell you tomorrow that I thought of you,
and you will have read this by then,
and you still won't know, that all of the
fruit in the world is for you, and all of
the poetry in the world is about you,
and you'd be abashed if I said it to you,
really, and I don't blame you, I guess.
But look, this day is so perfect. In fact,
the ground is so covered with hard stony
snowdirt and black ice that I almost killed
myself on my bike, doing tricks for you,
and the sky is a caved-in grey parachute
from the back of the gym, and the trees
are crumbling-dry at the tips, and there's cat
hair in the streets, and trash, but look,
I really have hands, and I can run, and
look, we have bodies, and we're alive,
and no matter all the decay of winter,
or how much dirty snow won't melt,
I swear you'll see the top of this with me.
