===============================

People of the future,
here is a secret:
I am just like you.
To me, the past is full
of absurd stereotypes;
a history
of ridiculous fads
idiotic sciences
and incomprehensible
politics.

But you ought to know
better by now.
You assume we are all
hanging on tight
to this giant,
deflating empire-
victims of our own
ignorance.

I know you assume
you are the pinnacle
of science, that
beauty is most perfect
when it is modern.

But you won't know
the beauty of our times.
Whitman wrote of grass
and rivers as means
of eternal communication;
but don't accuse me
of shortsightedness
when I tell you
about plastic bottles
bending light,
tinting sidewalks
with long green streaks.
I have more faith
in the immortality
of plastics than I do
in Walden Pond.
