[For Bjork Gudmunsdottir.]

====================================

Her voice defines its own cathedral
of ice, complete with shatters and cracks
and is at once a blanket to cover you
with warmth amidst the shimmering frost.

Your throat surrounds waves of sound
so temporary as a lifetime: who would not be
so terrified in hearing it, as rare
as a fingerprint?

It becomes a tragedy that every word
is not recorded for eternity- could you,
in possession of a voice like that, not live
in dread, that you could never build enough
of these palaces? Sing for us, always,
for your voice is rarer than oil:

Shatter these hanging chandeliers of ice
and send these echoes scampering
across the floor...how terrible it is
to build such a perfect collapse.

-e.
