In The Midst of Future Shock ======================= Who gave me a world that orchestrates a news broadcast such as this one observed today, Valentines Day, 2002 and reaffirming that the future is exactly what they said it would be way back in 1985 when we accused them of being panicked and ironic and disturbed. But today? Terrorists are building bombs out of teddy bears; cats are being cloned to replace your favorite deceased pet there are commercials with a cartoon egg talking about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as if survivors of genocide and rape are a target demographic and that the research shows they respond well to talking cartoon eggs... Meanwhile, a nuclear reactor is leaking outside of new york city and I am alone for Valentines Day except for my cat, who now, it seems, is eternal: Don't worry kitty cat, when you die we can just make photocopies there is nothing comforting that can't be reproduced or manufactured by demographic research. The past is always better than the future, as it must be if we are to move towards this, the inevitable closing of the world.
