After living in the inner city all my life,
I suddenly moved to little Athens.
It seemed there as though
there was no help for the desperate and fruitless,
of which I became one.
I am still in Athens, and tonight
the sky burst electric, like a body
weeping weeks after death.
The sky felt itself inside of me.
Children screamed. Umbrellas fled.
There were no animals but sirens:
not even the flying cockroaches
could brave our fury.
Firetrucks, like goldfish, scattered--
their hearts broken, tears
piping their bloody faces.
Across the street, the emergency lights
had heart attacks. Everyone
and everything, somewhere was out
in that world, falling apart. Water
came through my head onto the carpet,
Lay there panting like wet white wax.
Violetly, the magnolias barked once more
and went out--ah!--with the rest of everything.
