We ran through the same types of problems with both our Fjords when we first got them. Our farrier at the time thought we needed to change the angles on Kilar because he was too 'upright', so started taking down his toes. Of course, it put strain on his tendons and he went lame. He was an older horse to begin with. Now we trim him a little straighter than the usual because that is the way he is built. He is quite upright. His angles are about 55 I think. The mare had the opposite problem, was extremely flat footed when we got her (had been a brood mare many years). Her angles are now around 52. I like to 'roll the toes' a little on all my horses. It just seems to help them break over nicer when they move and they show less tendency to trip. That was tough to do with regular shoes, but the OMs don't mind. We got the pads for our OMs because the size difference front-back and side-side were so off, but we have not needed them so far. The boots are only a little large on the sides and do not slip. We have a pair of socks to put under the boots in case they rub the hair, but have not really needed them. We only put them on the front as that is where all of Kilar's weight is :-)
We are in the opposite side of MD from Frederick. Almost at the DE border.

Good luck with your new boots and your mare! Let us know how you like them when you try them. Tekin Family wrote:

Martie- I don't have the answer, but I just ordered a pair for my fjord
mare(same reasons as you)Did you need the foam pads? My mare measured 5
long and 4 3/4 wide so Valley Vet recommended the pads to fill in width. I
had my farrier measure on the day he trimmed her. Have been trying to get
her feet back in shape (she was being trimmed wrong by last farrier and my
former vet was just as dumb, knew nothing about feet until I saw she was not
balanced Just spend $$$ on x rays and different vet and different farriers
opinions to get her going in the right direction. Very upsetting for a while
seeing her lame then finding out she was being trimmed wrong he was lowering
her heals and not taking enough off toe. any advise would be helpfull
Linda in western mass. My married son lives in frederick maryland going
down next week , or you in that part. ???
