My use of "indispensible" was taken the wrong way. I didn't intend it to mean that I would build something that was difficult to maintain. I feel exactly the opposite about that, and I try to build everything so it's easy for other developers to understand and extend in the future.
Rather, I meant making *my services* indispensible -- i.e. doing such a strong job that the client can't imagine doing the next project without me. Anyway, I've only been in this game a short time, and I'm very much making it up as I go along.
