Same here, I started when it was "futuresplash."  At first I was
fascinated with the effects possible, then I was drawn into using it
for data display.

When I want to learn something, I focus in on that one thing and do a
simple example.  I save that example and use it as a reference.  Every
tiny aspect of Flash I've done as a simple example.  One thing that
helped me was to look at other peoples' code on this list and try it
out every possible variation for myself.  It also helps to be slightly
obsessed with Flash/AS, IMHO, as is true for any programming language
or technology for that matter.
