To phrase it as a formal question- For those who have picked up other
languages after or at the same time as ActionScript- which have you found
helped boost your learning the best and why?
As a follow up question- despite Java's similarity to ActionScript is it
"too much work" for the result?

I would recommend you learning haXe (http://haxe.org).
It introduces interesting concepts that can be modelized in AS2 although
they are more natural in haXe, and it can compile to Flash as well, so
you can actually use it instead of ActionScript (the Beta2 give access
to 98% of the Flash API).
