I had a similar problem, but it was on a Mac. It turned out to be a bug with Flash Player 7 - something to do with resolving relative paths (I can't remember exactly). This bug was fixed in Flash Player 8 - so we resolved it by publishing for Flash Player 7, but requiring Flash Player 8 on a Mac.
Don't know if it is the same with linux, but I guess it's somewhere to start.
