Why not asking him sources and asks questions about his own sources? Why did you do it that way? Why did you do use that? Etc...
You'll see both what is capable of by looking closely at his sources and see his skills by asking right questions about it. I can't think you won't find out that someone is faking sources when you'll ask precise questions about it.
