I think you'd be better off simply allowing the logged-in users access to the download for a fairly short period of time - a week, or maybe just a couple of days. Downloads can fail, after all. This is the approach that some epublishers use. For example, I buy a decent number of books from Manning. When I buy them, or later when they've been updated, I get an email with a link good for a week.
