Mike, 1. I suspect it is trying to access an "unvalid" portaudio device. You can try to delete the .fldigi directory under your home directory. In that case I believe Fldigi will try for the OSS devices (/dev/dsp) first, then you can try to re-selct the desired portaaudio device.
2. The GNU library (GLIBC) is at the core of your operating system and I think it is pretty difficult to upgrade it independantly. Hence the benefit of re-compiling with your version of GLIBC.
