I compile Fldigi on my Debian installations routinely and I use
portaudio. I don't recall having to do anything special. In fact my
Signallink USB is recognized without any extra effort on my part.

In some ways, yes. Just be careful asserting that around the time
people are trying to upgrade from one release to the next. The Ubuntu
flavors seem a bit more fraught with adventure than Debian,

Hmmmm. I build Fldigi using the supplied scripts. i.e.:
./configure --enable-optimizations=native
make
sudo make install
Here is the output at the end of the conigure script's run:

That's it. Perhaps the `apt-get build-dep fldigi' process is missing the
portaudio dependency? I've never used it as I don't bother with trying
to integrate locally built packages into the Debian package system. As
Hamlib (locally compiled), Fldigi, and CQRlog (downloaded binary from the
home site) are the only ham programs I use, it's not much of a handicap.
