There is no difference. You have a frequency control. In the case of SSB and
CW the output frequency just happens to be the VFO frequency. In the case of
digital modes, the output frequency is the combination of VFO frequency and
the low IF (audio) subcarrier.

Here is the thing and perhaps this will help. We already do this in the rig.
Our "VFO" frequency is the composite of the first LO, the first IF, the
second LO and 2nd IF. We already accept without thinking that the tuning
knob is going to move everything in the proper direction and by the same
amount to give us output on the proper frequency. I am taking that one step
further and including that capability to include the very low 3rd IF that
occurs around 1500 Hz inside the computer that is running fldigi.
