The automation libraries are for automated UI testing, not FlexUnit unit testing. They are for things like FlexMonkey, QTP, SilkTest, etc. I believe if you are very careful about how you code, and follow FlexMonkey's guidelines, there is a way to run FlexMonkey tests without the automation libraries, but you'd need to confirm that. You also get the profiler, network monitor, and integrated FlexUnit tests from within FB.
