I am a little surprized about the different startup sequence. I would have expected them to be equal or reproduceably random, but you say that if you do it the one way it is allways Pinger socket ist opened first and if you do it the other way Pinger socket is opened later.
Could you please post the MAVEN_OPTS and maven parameters you use in your hudson build and when you execute it manually?
