only FDS has the messaging capabilities...if that is really what your app needs. (build a RT chat client, stuff like that) Depending on what you want there may be other ways to achieve the same results in CF. For example, I want my flex app on one client to initiate a chat session on another. That needs FDS to do it efficiently. (polling would work without FDS, but not scale very well)
however we shall see what Scorpio brings (ColdFusion 8).
