I can speak to the JSON stuff I've done it with HttpRequrest and then used, com.adobe.serialization.json (it's included in the AS3 corelib: http://code.google.com/p/as3corelib) to de-serialize the JSON data. It's how we did it at Snapvine, all of our widgets run on Restful JSON.
Take this URL for example: http://www.snapvine.com/api/get_voice_drop/fbaf301c7a4f11dd9e130030485b0f88 Worked great for us.
