I'm not sure if this is applicable, but since a "newline" on a windows 
system is \r\n (CR + LF), is it possible that hitting enter adds both 
these characters, and then hitting backspace only removes the last 
character, leaving the \r?

I would have thought the built-in TextArea component would handle 
stuff like that, though...
