Just FYI for anyone reading, the bug has been reopened and the tester has commented. Apparently the problem was that they were alt-tabbing between the flex app and flex builder to see the trace output. Once I posted the version that outputs the null to the screen, they reproduced it. Chalk this up to just providing a user-unfriendly test case.
