Another mysterious and possibly more helpful way to do this is to use a ClassFactory for the renderer. Then you can set properties on it that are at the document scope, and the renderer doesn't need to know what the name of the function even is, it only needs to know that the name of the function will be passed to it and that it can then call the function.
