Best off thinking of it like the following. Your entire presentation "could" be in mxml but the logic needs to be in AS. However you can mix the AS in mxml files via the script tag.
To do anything non trivial requires AS in my opinion. The answer really depends on your definiation of seriously. 90% of the AS you need to know is quite simple for most cases.
