Just read your last post a little more.  To add an Image control, first create 
a var:

private var myImage:Image;

Then in createChildren():

override protected function createChildren():void
{
super.createChildren();
             
if ( !myImage )
{
myImage = new Image();
addChild( myImage );
}

}
