Based on what I see/read you need to specify an inputFormat

    var dateValidator:DateValidator = new DateValidator();
    dateValidator.inputFormat = "MM/DD/YYYY";

    var dateObj:Date = new Date();
    Alert.show(dateValidator.validate(df.format(dateObj)).type);
    Alert.show(df.format(dateObj));
