Exactly, that’s my concern.

We’ll  be using the Sandy 3D API (http://www.flashsandy.org/ ) in Apollo, but without true 3D support. (Example: Animated 3D kitten with texture mapping and camera control http://www.flashsandy.org/sources/1_1/demos/kitty/) which is not a bad thing, but is suffering from lack of hardware support to achieve high frame rates with complex models and textures.

BTW, In my opinion this is a worthy cause and should inspire the support of the community with what they have been able to achieve within flashplayer already.

There is also papervision which has gone opensource recently. (http://blog.noventaynueve.com/2006/10/08/if-you-love-something/)

(Example: Static, texture-mapped Rhino with camera control http://www.noventaynueve.com/lab/rhino/)

These are both exciting but lack the hardware support required to get over about 15FPS on decent hardware.

(Dual Core P4 3.0 w/2GB Ram and ATI900)

This is where Apollo could really come in for true 3D support :^)

I don't know why you would be confident of this at all. It has not
been listed as part of any Apollo API, and, according to the FAQ, they
are still deciding whether there will be a way to extend the platform
with native code. In fact, it seems unlikely to me given their strong
desire for write once run anywhere. But in any case, there is, as far
as I can tell, no reason for condience in 3D access.
