Thanks Gordon I eventually ended up converting to an mx project, which bloated my app from 162K to 480K. At the moment size isnt an issue and I have gone for the ease of development over size. Customizing the flex component code is an option I havent considered yet, thinking that my only hopes were either to re-invent the wheel or wait for the flash 9 compontents to come out.
