So, returning to this issue ... I just ended up going through the PopUpManagerImpl code, looking at the createModalWindow() and showModalWindow() methods and modeled my own modal implementation after that. It's a bit of a pain in the arse.
I'm creating a whole notification management framework for a project, so I have the luxury of being able to do this.
