I use FMS for the real time multiplayer game , for free flash server beside FMS 
you should check RED5, its open source flash server .Regards

            Joel, I don't think AMFPHP would fit for this purpose. You'd better 
use a Java server with Smartfox for instance. You would than connect to it 
through socket. I have already acomplished that using my home-made Java server 
for games. :)
