Hmm, have you tried setting the static XML.prettyPrinting property to false before constructing the XML: http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/2/langref/XML.html#prettyPrinting or played around with the other static properties on XML?

Anyway, that works fine except for the fact that in cases of "mixed" xml content flex seems to add (significant) white space in circumstances I have yet to figure out. Has anyone seen this?
